History

The Grand Rapids-Kent County Convention Arena Authority held a public grand opening of the $211 million DeVos Place convention center. The family friendly event showcased the new convention center’s 250,000 square feet of meeting and exhibit space in a fun and activity-packed atmosphere on Saturday, Dec. 20 2003.

The daylong open house kicked-off with an unveiling ceremony featuring project partners and community and business leaders. Directly thereafter, visitors took self-guided tours of the grand gallery, exhibit hall, and meeting rooms, then enjoy several exhibits, attractions, and local entertainment highlighting the
size and scope of the facility.

Thousands of people showed up to tour the facility and enjoy the carnival like atmosphere by riding the Ferris Wheel which looked like it would hit the 75’ ceiling, climb a rock wall, ride a carousel, play in the Dragon Hide n Slide, or test your speed pitch courtesy of the Whitecaps Baseball Team.

The final phase of the DeVos Place expansion, which includes a 40,000 square-foot ballroom, was completed in early 2005.  DeVos Place Steelcase Ballroom has a 12,000 square foot kitchen to handle all of our catering needs and is managed by the exquisite chefs at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel. The completion of six Riverview meeting rooms above the ballroom and the conference center has enhanced the destination package for our larger conferences.
